How to Improve Your Phone Number's Quality Rating

5 Min Read·Updated 2026·Meta Official API

Your WhatsApp Business phone number has a quality rating that is determined by Meta. This rating is based on the feedback from users who receive your messages over the past seven days. It's a crucial factor that affects your messaging limits.

You can check your quality rating in the Meta Business Manager > WhatsApp Manager > Phone Numbers.

Understanding the Quality Ratings

  • High (Green): Excellent quality.
  • Medium (Yellow): Good quality.
  • Low (Red): Your number's quality is poor.

Why Quality Rating Matters

  • Messaging Limits: You cannot upgrade to a higher messaging tier unless your quality rating is Medium or High.
  • Account Status: If your rating remains Low for 7 consecutive days, your messaging limit may be decreased to the next lowest tier. If it is already at the lowest tier, your account may be placed in a "Flagged" state with further restrictions.

How to Improve and Maintain a High Quality Rating

The quality rating is a direct reflection of how your customers perceive your messages. The key is to send high-quality, expected, and relevant communications.

1. Ensure You Have a Clear Opt-In This is the most important factor. Only send business-initiated messages to users who have explicitly consented to receive them.

  • Never purchase or use a third-party list of phone numbers.
  • Make the opt-in action clear on your website or other channels (e.g., an unchecked checkbox).

2. Send High-Value, Personalized Messages

  • Use Variables: Personalize every message with the customer's name ({{1}}). Use other variables for order numbers, dates, etc., where relevant.
  • Segment Your Audience: Don't send the same message to everyone. Use segments in LeadClose to send targeted offers and information that are relevant to specific groups of customers. A message that is relevant is far less likely to be reported as spam.

3. Be Mindful of Message Frequency

  • Avoid sending too many messages in a short period. Bombarding users is a quick way to get blocked or reported.
  • Use the Intelligent Scheduler for campaigns to send messages at times when users are most likely to be receptive.

4. Respect Opt-Outs Immediately

  • Make it easy for users to unsubscribe. All marketing templates should have a clear opt-out option (e.g., a "Stop" button).
  • When a user opts out, immediately add them to a "Do Not Contact" list or apply an "Opt-Out" tag in LeadClose to exclude them from all future campaigns.

By following these best practices, you can ensure your customers value your messages, which will naturally lead to a high quality rating and allow you to scale your communications effectively.
